What do you see?

PART I

Picture this:

The wind softly rustles the tree leaves.

Birds call out and sing from branches.

Winding pathways curl out on the left and right.

You are on a straight path that leads to the playground.

Gravel crunches beneath your feet. There are other people on the path.

Some are standing in the sunlight with a hand hovering above their face to block

their view of the sun while absorbing the warmth.

You reach the playground.

Children are playing on different large toys.

Parents join in or watch from the sidelines, ready to jump in if there is a problem.

Hope is a little girl. She is seven years old and has a huge smile.

Rudeness is also seven, born one month after Hope.

Rudeness is a bully, preying on the weak.

When Hope sees Rudeness kicking those who are down, she steps in, pigtails swishing as she hurries to

help the broken. This time the broken boy is Trust. He is four years old. Trust is often betrayed.

He is a sweet little boy who, just like his name, never stops trusting.

Hope reaches down and hoists Trust up with a slender hand.

Trust is tall for his age; he looks like he is five or six years old.

Trust is covered in bruises, old and new. His latest injury is a scraped knee and elbow.

Tears form in his eyes. “It hurts...” He says.

Trust sniffs and wipes his eyes with dirty hands; he uses an arm to slide across his dripping nose.

Hope unzips her backpack and pulls out a first aid kit.
